ESTRO Educational Grants (deadline 30 April 2012)
ESTRO offers a number of educational grants to junior ESTRO members wishing to participate in teaching courses. These grants are supported by commercial companies (Application form).
SELECTION CRITERIA
- These grants are specifically meant for young ESTRO members who are still in training or have not yet achieved a permanent staff position and are unable to register without financial support.
- To be eligible for selection for a travel grant, membership dues for the current year should be paid in advance.
- Candidates should be active in the field of radiotherapy, radiobiology, radiation physics, or radiation technology.
- Candidates should submit a curriculum vitae and a recommendation letter from their department head stating that financial support is essential for the candidate to enable her/him to attend the course.
- The amount of each grant is of €750 from which the early junior registration fee is deducted.
ESTRO Technology Transfer Grants - TTG (deadline 30 March 2012)
EStRO also offers a number of mobility grants to ESTRO members, wishing to learn a specific technique or methodology important for their clinical practice or their research project. These "Technology Transfer Grants" (TTG) may be used for short visits (1 to 3 weeks) to another institute where the expertise exists.
ESTRO is delighted that there are now so many high quality applicants for the TTG awards. Unfortunately, this also means that we are unable to fund all of the applicants and the selection process has become truly competitive. The selection is made by a panel of 6 members of the Education Committee, representing clinical oncologists, radiation physicists, radiotherapy technologists and radiobiologists. The members of the panel individually evaluate the quality of each application before we hold a conference call to make the final decisions. It is impossible to support all of the worthwhile applications and we are now faced with some tough decisions.
The ESTRO TTG will cover all mobility costs (travel + accommodation) established on the basis of a realistic budget, but will not provide a salary. The average total amount will be about €1,500-2,000. The budget is to be submitted together with a recommendation letter from the department head and an invitation letter from the host institute.
SELECTION CRITERIA
These grants are meant for clinicians, physicists, biologists, scientists and RTT’s, working or studying in the field of radiation oncology and being ESTRO members.
The candidate should submit the following documents:
- a short, very clear description of her/his project & the aim of her/his visit to another department
- a letter of agreement from her/his department head, supporting the project and visit
- a letter from the hosting department head, stating acceptance and support of the project and visit
- a short curriculum vitae
- an estimate of the expected expenses: travel costs based on the cheapest travel fare available (max €700 will be reimbursed), accommodation costs and a per diem appropriate for the venue/country visited
- a 2-page report within one month after the stay
To improve your chances of obtaining funding here are some points to keep in mind:
· Write a very clear description of what it is you plan to do and how this will benefit you and your home institute.
· ESTRO encourages teams of physicists or oncologists together with technicians to apply for these grants. However, any applications for more than one person should be written as a single application and the maximum funding will be €2500. If the total costs exceed this, the home institute will have to supplement the ESTRO grant.
· ESTRO will not support more than one person of the same discipline to visit the same institute. We recognize that this may sometimes be of value, but resources only allow a single award to an institute in one round of applications.
· Similarly, if 2 separate applications come from the same institute but for different projects, these applications will be in direct competition and only one will be considered for funding.
The TTG Application Form should be used to provide this information to viviane.vanegten@estro.org
The length of the stay will normally be between 1 and 3 weeks but exceptions can be granted.
